LED Film Screen vs Crystal Screen: Which One Should You Choose?

Summary: If your project needs maximum invisibility on indoor glass and will never face physical contact or weather, choose an LED film screen. If the screen may face scratches, dust, UV exposure, or outdoor conditions, choose a crystal screen. For projects that need both — transparency of 85–95% and outdoor-grade IP65 durability — the newer "King Kong" crystal screen category merges film-level transparency with double-layer hard encapsulation, at only ≤7 kg/m² and 2.5–5 mm thickness, cuttable and bendable to any size.

The Short Answer

  • Choose an LED film screen when: indoor glass curtain walls or storefronts, gentle environments, maximum invisibility when off, and lowest cost per m² are the priorities.
  • Choose an LED crystal screen (King Kong type) when: the installation faces public touch, dust, UV, humidity, or outdoor exposure; when you need scratch-proof, IP65 waterproof durability without sacrificing transparency.
  • Skip both when you need fine-pitch indoor resolution (below P8) or full-motion HD video at close range — a conventional LED cabinet is the better tool.

What to Consider When Choosing

  • Exposure conditions. Will the screen face touch, cleaning, dust, rain, or direct UV? Film screens rely on soft adhesive film; crystal screens add hard protective layers.
  • Transparency requirement.Film screens and King Kong crystal screens both reach 85–95% transparency at larger pitches — the glass still looks like glass when the screen is off.
  • Weight and glass load. Both categories are ultra-light; the King Kong crystal screen weighs ≤7 kg/m², safe for most curtain-wall glass without reinforcement.
  • Brightness and sunlight.Storefronts facing direct sun need 4,000+ nits. Pitch and LED binning determine this, not the screen category alone.
  • Shape constraints.Curved glass, columns, and irregular openings require cuttable, bendable modules rather than rigid cabinets.
  • Maintenance access.Front-serviceable designs matter once the screen is laminated onto glass 10 meters above the floor.

Our Engineering Data (King Kong LED Crystal Screen)

INMU's King Kong LED crystal screen, launched 2026, is our answer to the film-versus-durability trade-off. Published specifications:

  • Five models (P8 / P10 / P16 / P20 / P30) with brightness from 4,200 nits down to 800 nits, and transparency from ≥80% up to ≥95% as pitch increases.
  • P16 example: ≥88% transparency, 2,600 nits, recommended viewing distance beyond 16 m, average power draw 240 W/m².
  • Physical specs: ≤7 kg/m², 2.5–5 mm thick, modules of 1000×240 mm or 1500×240 mm, cuttable and bendable to any size — including curved glass.
  • Protection: double-layer hard encapsulation; scratch-proof, dust-proof, UV-resistant; indoor IP54 / outdoor IP65.
  • Display performance: ≥3840 Hz refresh rate, 16-bit grayscale, 160°/140° viewing angle, no camera moiré, static scan.
  • Environment: operating range −20℃ to +50℃, 10–75% RH; input AC110–240V; rated lifespan 100,000 hours.
  • Control systems: compatible with Colorlight, Mooncell, and Nova, synchronous or asynchronous.

A Typical Installation Scenario

A shopping mall atrium with a curved glass facade is the scenario this product was designed for: during the day the glass needs to stay visually clean (85%+ transparency, nearly invisible when off), at night the storefront plays full-motion brand content, and the surface must survive public contact, cleaning crews, and seasonal humidity. A film screen would risk scratching and adhesive aging within the first year; a rigid cabinet would destroy the architecture and overload the glass. The King Kong crystal screen's combination of ≤7 kg/m² weight, bendable modules, and IP65 hard encapsulation is what makes this class of project feasible.

Common Mistakes

  • Specifying a film screen for a public-contact storefront. Soft film scratches; once scratched, the panel section usually needs full replacement.
  • Assuming "transparent" means "invisible at any pitch." Transparency is pitch-dependent: a P8 panel is ≥80% transparent, P30 reaches ≥95% — choose pitch by viewing distance, not by transparency alone.
  • Ignoring brightness in sun-facing glass. Under direct sunlight, a 1,600-nit panel washes out. Sun-facing storefronts should specify 4,000+ nits.
  • Overlooking moiré on camera. Retail content is filmed constantly; below ~3840 Hz refresh rate, phone cameras capture flicker bands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can a crystal screen be used outdoors permanently? Yes — the outdoor version carries an IP65 waterproof and dustproof rating and UV-resistant encapsulation, operating from −20℃ to +50℃.

Q2: Is 85% transparency enough for a storefront? At P16–P20 (88–90% transparency) most visitors do not notice the screen when it is off. Daylight entry is essentially unaffected.

Q3: Can the screen be cut to fit irregular glass shapes? Yes. King Kong crystal screen modules support cutting and bending to any size, including curved curtain walls.

Q4: What viewing distance do I need for P16? Beyond roughly 16 meters for comfortable full-image viewing — following the 1 mm pitch ≈ 1 m viewing distance rule of thumb.

Q5: How heavy is it? Will my glass need reinforcement? ≤7 kg/m² including structure — most standard curtain-wall glass handles it without reinforcement, but always confirm with your facade engineer.

Q6: Which control systems does it support? Colorlight, Mooncell, and Nova, in both synchronous and asynchronous modes.
